changing timing belt yourself question??
Hey guys,
Does anyone know a site or link that could show a do-it-yourself timing belt job on a 2000 a6 4.2???
I have the time, I just need to know how it's done and what particular tools i might need.
any help would be great.
thanks.

www.blauparts.com sells a complete kit and will rent you the tools and it comes with instructions. I don't know of a pictorial DIY on line for a 4.2. A repair manual from www.bentleypublishers.com would be helpful also.

I don't know if they have yet a video for the 4.2 engine, but you can get a very good idea what's involved from the 2.7/2.8 video made by JHMotorsports.com. By the way, you can watch a trailer .
Actually you can call them and ask if they made yet one for the 4.2.
The video is only $ 30 and it shows how to change WITHOUT and WITH the locking tools. If you buy a TB kit from them it comes included in the kit.
I would suggest you rather purchase or rent the locking bar and pin if you want piece of mind, unless you are a skilled mechanic (even in that case, the camshaft locking bar takes all the guessing and posssible mistakes out of the equation).
As far as the renting tools, JH rents them as long as you need them, unlike Blau (only a week), and for only $ 2 more... The deposit is only $ 160, which plenty covers the price for the tools, if you decide you forget to return them. Blau requires a deposit of $ 375; it's easy math.

there were actually some decent videos on youtube. not real detailed, but you can definately see whats going on. there were also trailers for some of the pay videos on there so you can see what you would get if you bought the instructional videos. they look like they walk you through it pretty well
