I have a 2006 A6 Avant 3.2
The orange check engine light (it really is just an engine icon with no writing) comes on for 2-3 days and then goes away for a week or so then returns. Car runs fine. Any insights?

You need to get the code to find out why the light goes on.
Do a search on VagCom and you'll se lots of info about the tools needed to read the CEL codes.

Seriously, you need to pull the codes. Since it comes and goes, its prolly not serious. Prolly something like EGR or cats.

 

Gas cap tight?

 

Yup, gas cap is tight. I also re-tightened the coolant cap and the light went away temporarily, this could have been related or it could have been a coincidence since it is intermitent
I guess I have to find the code...
