I'd bet it is in the Bently manual..

 

Could not find any tests for the Climate Controls, that do NOT use any scan tools, in the Bentley manual. (CD or paper) I did find that there are about 30-35 different versions of the A6 climate control. (Some work in very few cars.) Maybe they have two many different self diagnostic tests to be printed.... I KNOW my control HAS a self test.... just do not know how to read it!

The CD procedures for the scan tools are a bit confusing. It'll be a few days before I can sit with both computers (manual and VAG-Com) and the car to figure it out.

I had a similar problem with blower coming on and off at random, specially in the summer time. Found a problem with sunroof solar panel control relay (have a hot weather package with sun-roof solar panel feeding cabin blower when in the sun). The relay is mounted below the dash-board and has a number 385 on it. Some other guys went and bought a new relay (anyway between 85 and 170 $). I took it apart and re-soldered through hole connections (the relay is made using hybrid technology SMT and through hole which is hand made). The connections to the connector pins and the power relay were bad (something called "gray cancer", re-crystallization of the solder alloy).
No problems since. The blower works as expected.
