Bringing up an old topic but since I got my 2001 A6 2.7t I've went through 2 tanks of gas and have gotten 260 and 270 miles per tank. Averages were 16 and 17 mpg. From everything I've found on this site this is way low. The second tank where I got 270 I was driving as easy as possible the entire time. Checked tire pressure and that was ok. Went to autozone to pull codes and nothing comes up. I know the engine has been running rich though (sometimes when I am sitting at stoplights I smell a burning oil/gas smell..) Does the ross-tech Vag-Com tell you if your engine is running rich or give you more details than just codes?
Anyway, my friend that went through Audi Tech school told me to clean the MAF which helped his 2001 S4. Picked up the cleaner at checker for 6 bucks and I already had the necessary T-20 security hex. It took about 15 min to clean the thing. While it dried, I debadged the car about an hour and half. Got some small scuffs from the rubbing compound but I haven't waxed it yet. Might have scrubbed a little to hard. I'm pretty sure those should disappear after the wax. I did this at 200 miles left on the tank and I feel like I will get over 270. I already have the fuel injection cleaner for the next fillup which should be in a couple days. I will update the MPG when the next tank runs out (probably a week, hopefully longer).

I haven't calculated it my self but before I got my oil the dash screen said I was getting about 20.1mpg. I would usually get about 280-300 miles per tank. I was pretty happy with that but after the oil change it all went down!!! Now it says about 18mpg and can barely get 280 miles before my gas light comes on(which I hate doing)!! I recently put air in thetire since they were low! Anyone know why it might have gone down after the oil change? I unfortunitly drive mostly city miles and am a little hot on the pedal but haven't really changed my driving style from before and after the oil change. I am going to put this fule system cleaner in my car in a week. It's from Napa, called 44k, supposed to be really good!!
After the MAF cleaning I got 285 miles. I already that feels like it definitely helped. SO I would suggest trying that. I filled it up today and put in a fuel injector cleaner. I will post the miles and MPG when I get through it.
OK guys stop playing guessing games with your gas milage and do it right.
Fill the tank and set your trip OD to zero. Drive around to your heart's content.
When it gets near empty fill the tank and note the milage on the trip OD and how many gallons it took.
Get out your handy dandy calculator or have your best girl divide the miles you went by the number of gallons you put in and Walla you have the MPG you got on that tank full.
But your not done yet ... Reset the trip OD and do it all over again a few times. Keep track of the gallons and milage this way for a few tank fulls. Calculate the milage for each segment and then add all the gallons and miles from each segment to see how you really did.
It's not rocket science but it does take a bit of math and is good excuse toget that pretty gal involved with your Vondercar.
