Default do i need a new transmission?

my audi auto. 2000 a6 2.8L just stopped moving one day and they charged me $225 to reprogram the Control Module. now they gave it back and it is catching the gears but makes a loud whirring noise which gets even louder when it switches to a higher gear. the shop told me that the differential is bad and that i will need a new transmission? is the differential part of the transmission? i have no idea. how much does it cost to replace the differential? do you have to replace the trans?

thanks!

Quattro or FWD?

The short answer is no, it is a seperate part within the transmission housing. Usually, differential failure is just a bearing gone bad and most of the bearings can be replaced without removing the transmission, maybe even all of them. Make SURE you have a qualified Audi mechanic do this as pinion gear setup can be tricky! This may be why "they" don't want to do the work and gave you the easy answer of replaicng the whole transmission.
