Electronic Cam Adjuster on 04 A6 2.7T
My Check Engine light goes on and off intermittently and sometimes my car makes a noise like it's out of oil. The dealer tells me the code reads a problem with the "electronic camshaft location adjuster". It will cost US $1600 to fix. Has anybody ever heard of this? Am I being taken for a ride? My car is a little more than 2 years old with 58,000 highway miles on it (just off warranty).

With a price tag that high im guessing you were quoted for replacing the camshaft adjuster. Totally different than a camshaft position sensor. If your car makes a noise like its out of oil you may not have an electrical problem at all. The camshaft adjuster is the last item to recieve oil and it uses oil to adjust the cam timing. No oil equals no adjustment and a code for a faulty adjuster.

Doing this basicly includes doing a T-Belt service (well kinda) you have to remove the cams, so you also have to remove the timing belt too that why labor is so much
