Hi all! Newbie here (not another one!). I've been looking at an A-6, which looks to be the smallest Audi model that I can fit into. Local dealer has an '07demo for sale. One thing that I noticed is in the engine bay, near the battery terminal, a foam-backed lining material had been chewed up and was flaking off into the engine. It looks like someone messed it up while trying to jump start the battery. I noticed other lining material covering various parts of the engine bay, including the sides and the bottom of the hood. The salesperson claimed this was a fire proofing material,which some of it may be, but mostof it looked like sound-deadening insulation. What exactly is this stuff, and can I expect it all to flake off over time, sinceit will be exposed to considerable amounts of heat. Can the damaged area I saw easlily be repaired (if at all)? Any infowould be appreciated; I know it's probably not a big deal but I don't think it should be there on what is effectively a new car.

OK,OK, I'll be the firstto admit that flaking foam isn't the most exciting topic:eek: but can't someone help me here? [X(]I mean if you open your hood do you find all this liner stuff hanging down over the engine[:o] (you know, kinda like the headliners on any GM product over 5 years old).;)
I added these smileys hoping it'll help get a better response. If that doesn't work, I'll tryposting an avatar with scantily clad women doing a full tune-up on an R8.

I don't think your approach is the problem, I think that nobody knows what the hell you are talking about.. lol Sorry man. But you can still post that pic of the chick and the R8....:D

Thanks for the reply. It's pretty straightforward really. If you take a look, the entire engine bay is lined with a black lining material. It's along the inside of the fender wells, the firewall and other areas, includingaroundthe battery terminalin the left rear portion of the engine bay.It's hard not to see. My cocnern is simply that thismaterial, whichis foam backed, isflaking off an getting all over the place. I was wondering ifanyone has experienced this problem with their cars. The only reason I ask is becausethis liner material looks pretty flimsy and totally out of place on a $50K plus automobile.

I don't recall having that material on my 2003, except maybe on the hood. It's been 4 weeks since I've seen my car, though. I don't think there are a bunch of 2007 owners here. We're mostly poor 2000-2004 owners.

If it's a dealer, then I suggest you look at some brand new cars or some other recent models and determine if your problem is unique to this vehicle or common to the newer cars. I agree that a $50k luxury car shoudl not have a flaking insulation problem. Do you think floodwater from New Orleans could cause that?

That's an interesting question, but I don't think so. It looks like some ham-fisted employee tore this liner up while trying to hook a jump box up to the battery post. If I do pursue this I guess I'll need to have the dealer run a carfax report?

Why would a dealer have to use a jump box on a 07? I dont think a dealer running a carfax would help ya. Try this! Have the "Ham Fisted" dealer replace the stuff or take some $$ off the bottom line

I'm with you bro- I'm looking for a full replacement or at leasthave them professionally repair the damage if possible.
I've been to a number of dealers where brand new cars sitting in the showroom need a jump box to get them started. In fact the jump box seems to be a standard fixture in juse about every dealership.

I have seen a bunch of A6's that have the foam that looked "chewed" before. However, being an Audi salesman I have never had any issue with it. I almost want to say it came that way from Audi. Perhaps later today when I'm bored I'll go open the hoods on a few A6's and see if they match up. We had a 3.2 CVT in our showroom with that, and I was curious about it too. I'm not the type to lie to my customers, so I tell them the honest truth, "I don't know!"

Thanks reaper- I was beginning to think I was the only one seeing this thing with the foam.
I thought the A6's were selling pretty well. Hopefully you don't get too bored!
