Default Extended warranty plans?

Hello all,

Newbie poster here...new to the world of Audi. So far I love the driving experience and have found some good information here on your forums.

Here's my situation. Two weeks ago, I purchased a 2002 Audi A6 quattro 3.0 with 29,000. Clean carfax, one owner off private lease. Love the drive to work and back now. I was offered an extended warranty plan from AUL up to 100,000 or 5 years for $2950. That seemed kind of steep to me, and I turned it down. Bought the car as-is. I can still go back and get the extended warranty any time between now and 50,000 miles. I have been encouraged by a few people that this would be a good investment, but I don't have that kind of cash-flow right now to buy it straight up.

Two weeks into driving my A6, there is some unusual noise coming from under the hood. The sound of my V6 is there, smooth as ever, but there is also the sound of a lawnmower. This sound continues for about 5 seconds after I shut down the engine. A family member who is a mechanic tells me it is one of my engine fans.

So, my questions are as follows:

1. Any recommendations on extended warranty plans (value is important)?

2. Should I alert the dealer to the problem? I don't think they'll fix it, but it may become a pre-existing issue if I report it.

3. Anyone else have this problem with engine fans? If so, how much of a hassle and how much $$$ to fix it?

Thanks for any information!

Drake
