That is about 13mpg. Just over half of what we get. (We get in the mid to low 20's -- in town.) There are many things that can lower your gas mileage. Poor gas or driving habits, low tire air pressure, dragging brakes and out of wack suspension all can hurt gas mileage BUT the biggest killer is badly tuned engine.

Have you put a VAG-Com on it? It can have quite a few codes and still not have a Check Engine Light. (CEL)

These are not cars made for city driving. If you use it as you said mostly for city driving, you either have to live with it the way it is, or get rid of it for a more economical car.
The best I got so far on the highway is 24.5 mpg and 24.4, and most days I put it on cruise control at 72 mph.
I would assume with all the shifting lag going on from 1st to 2nd gear, so many short trips in town just kills the gas mileage. Probably the mpg average in mine would drop around 13-14 if I were to drive only in town.

Edit:
By the way (as is an old thread), even though driving a 2.7T manual how the hell the original poster gets 27 mpg on mostly in city driving ("local mileage" as he refered to in the combo)?
If he would have said that gets 27 mpg on mostly highway driving maybe, just maybe, I would have believed him. There's no way he gets 27 mpg in town...

Keep in mind the primary driver is my wife. She drives like... well, a little old lady. (4'7" and older than me.)

Premium gives us a little better highway but doesn't improve MPG over mid grade for in town. We made a circle across the US in 2004, the best highway was 29mpg at 70mph. Average was about 27. I think they put more alcohol in the gas now...

It wasn't running as well when we parked it last March. I didn't think to read the display for mpg then... I suspect it was close to 10. I just got it back together but haven't really checked mileage .... most likely low as I am enjoying the acceleration.

chefro: good question, but i didn't think to question it as it's only what, 6 or 7 mpg less than what i average and i am the guy the slow drivers complain about.

13MPG is horrid. check for airflow restrictions. is it running hot? chugging? a very dirty air filter would probably drop it to 13, but i don't know. outside of running 50% throttle or better constantly, i don't have any other ideas off the top of my head.

i did a little test the other day, because i was curious. if i set the cruise @ 70mph on the freeway in clean air (not behind another vehicle), the onboard computer displays 32-36mpg on level ground. on a slight decline it will go up to 45-50mpg or better. a slight incline it will drop to 22-27mpg. my onboard computer says 20.4mpg overall average. actual miles/gallons will show me anywhere from 18 - 22. but like i said, i drive it hard. the only time i don't push the car hard is a standing start. i'll slip into first holding the revs around 2500rpm and will squeeze to about 2/3 throttle once the clutch is fully engaged before grabbing second if i need to "launch".

i tend to ramble
