Tips for buying 2000 A6 4.2
Hi guys, this is my first post. I'm currently looking into buying an used car and I came across this 2000 A6 4.2 with 38000 miles for $6500.00. The seller claims the car is in good condition and doesn't have any problems.
I am currently studying in the caribbean, so yes the prices down here are a lot lower for used Audi's than in the states (PR).
I'm planning to see the car this weekend and I will love to know what to look for and what to avoid. I don't have any previous experience with audi's and because of the shady nature of mechanics around here I would like to refrain from unnecessary repairs.
Suggestions are highly appreciated.

the 4.2 is one of the more reliable engines. unfortunately, in the 2000 it is mated to the transmission that has torque converter issues. take it for a test drive. it should shift very smoothly and regularly, up and down. if it doesn't walk away. even if it does, be aware the TC is a weak point in the driveline.
other than that, care and maintenance. if it looks like it has been well maintained and cared for it should be a pretty reliable ride.

Well I spoke to the seller and he told me the reason for sale is lack of use. He claims the tranny is not causing problems and the engine is running good. The only way to find out is to test drive it. Because the seller is 80 miles away from my location I need to make arrangements to see the car.
However I agree, $6500 is a pretty good deal. I'll keep you guys informed, thanks for the help.
