Help w/ overheating issue.

Its totally different. The one on the car is bigger and perfectly square, they look nothing alike. Heres a pic of it:

As you can see, theres 2, one to tell the ECU and thus the gauge, the other to turn on the fans.

It would have been too easy and simple (where's the proverbial German "order and discipline" 
) for them to keep the same sensor for all A6 models...
I have 2 different sensors in the rear main pipe, one is a "switch" (the big one - and mine has only three pins or prongs, however you want to call'em), and the second one is the "sensor" -much smaller, only 2 pins or prongs.
Big one - behind bank1; small one, behind bank 2, by the bleeder.
And of course, there's the fan switch in the radiator...

I had this same setup on the Ford Aerostar Cargo.. gauge read good, but engine would die when warmed up. Techs kept telling me it was the MAF...nope, Coolant Temp for the ECU.

. It sort of amazes me that I have the updated 3-prong model. Probably the previous owner had some Heating problems, although nowhere in the records there's any mentioning of a sensor replacement.

Resolution time!!!!!!
The overheating was caused by the thermostat, and my sensor is fine. I cant explain why it was throwing a code for it but the guy who fixed it showed me that I was told to check the wrong channels on the vag-com and thats why it was showing bad numbers.
On a side note edge-motors in west haverstraw did the job and they were fantastic. The were really cheap, worked fast, knew exactly what they were doing and were cool to hang with while the job was being done. I was very impressed with them and recommend them to anyone needing audi work in the tri-state.
