Default how do you pull cam sprockets with cam lock on

I am doing a timing belt job and am wondering how to put the belt back on with proper tension. I heard or saw somewhere that you can pull the cam sprockets off and let them free spin. This way your belt will be equal tension all around.

My question is ....how do you pull the sprocket once the cam lock is on.

It looks as if there is no gap behind the cam lock tool for the sprocket to pop off the shaft.

Thanks

Cam lock can come off. Use a gear puller to pull the sprocket once you loosen the bolt. Then slide the lock bar back on.

Right, you just need to loosen the bolt enough to pull them free, you can use just about any gear puller that will fit on it. Once the pulleys are pulled forward maybe 2mm or so they should free wheel.

mine popped right off without any gear puller. I found the lock bar over kill as the sprockets are quite hard to move unless you really nail them with something. The hard part is putting the sprocket back on in the same spot you took it off. This is assuming you are using it as a way to put the belt on correctly. I marked mine in several places then counted the teeth on the old belt to help me line it back up correctly.

I had no need to pull the sprocket in order to put the belt back on, I had to pull the sprocket in order to remove the camshaft/seals/tensioner.

If your just doing the TB I would just finagle it back on.

The whole point of taking off the sprocket is so that you don't have to count the teeth. If you take off the sprocket, then you don't need to put them back as the exact location.

No offense to you, but the way that you did is not the correct way. In simple terms, here are the steps.

1. Line up the cams
2. Loosen the sprockets
3. Lock the cams again with the lock bar
4. Tension the TB at the tensioner
5. Lock the cam sprockets with the lock bar is place.

Perhaps it wasn't the correct way but A it worked perfectly and B I'm confused how if you didn't mark everything how you know how to position the belt. It seems you could easily be a tooth or two off.
