Default How hard to replace motor mounts?

'98 a6q 2.8

The dealer says one is leaking.
Their labor estimate is 4 hours and $255 for parts.

I have done a lot of work on this car myself. Control arms, cv joints.

I have no idea what to expect from replacing the motor mounts.

Is this a job I could accomplish?

Is there a diy writeup for motor mounts?

Thanks.

How hard was it to change your control arms? I had to have the shop change the motor mounts on my other car. I have heard it depends which mount it is.

Leaking motor mounts??

That dosen't make sense to me.
I thought they were solid rubber but I might be thinking about the old 200QT.

it took me 2 hours on my 3.0. I had to bend a wrench to get to the top nut easier. I scraped the crap out of my nuckles but I would say it is more endurance than difficult. I could only get a wee turn at a time.

It took a little muscle and persuasion, but it was completely do-able.
I also have a scissor style car lift that made it so much easier.

@NH_USA
These motor mounts are oil filled/ hydraulic.

@Jackmup
Sounds like something I will tackle then.

Thanks.

I am replacing the front lower mount on the passenger side. I just removed the 3 bolted support underneath and slightly jacked the motor however the mount is not coming out... Every DIY article says the mount should "fall right out". I tried prying it with hammers, bars and all it does is move left and right... What am I missing?

If I remember correctly from reading a write up, there should be a long bolt going through the middle of the mount that needs to be removed in order to wiggle it out. Did you remove the entire bolt and not just the nut?

Well I removed three nuts, which allowed me to remove the support bracket from underneath... Exposing the bell shaped mount I need to replace. One of those nuts did belong to the bolt going directly through the bell shaped mount. That bolt going directly through is not removable, it is one with the mount...
After looking at the new replacement I have, I see the bolt is exposed at top, on the engine side. Is there a nut on top as well that I can't see? And if so, how the neck can I get it off??
Thanks

Lift the car and remove the wheel closest to that side. Right behind the half shaft you may be able to get to the top of the mount to take out that bolt.
