Default How much involved for changing brake pads? 01 A6 4.2

I've changed plenty of brake pads on domestic cars, but never attempted my 2001 A6 4.2.

How much involved to change brake pads, any special tools needed?

Suggestions of which brand/store to buy from?

Thanks in advance

The fronts only require a pry bar and a 7mm allan tool, pretty easy but the rears require a special tool that screws in the caliper, i think you can rent it from autozone if you don't wanna buy it from audi.

I just did this on mine for the first time. real simple once you know what to do. The caliper is in two pieces in the rear. unbolt the two halves by taking out the 2 bolts with the rubber sleeve on them. Once they're out, then pry the center of the caliper out and the brake pads will fall out. You dont really need the caliper tool if you have a large C clamp and some channel locks. Just take off the fluid reservoir cap, put the C clamp on the piston, tighten it and turn the piston clockwise with the channel locks. you'll have to retighten as you turn because it's screwing back into position. set the pads on the bracket and slide the caliper over top of them. Takes about 15 minutes per corner.

u have to take the calliper apart to change the rotor i thought you coudl just pop the rotor out n u didnt have to dissasemble everything n then bleed the brakes n pistons etc

you dont have to bleed the brakes. take the 2 bolts out that hold the caliper together, pry on the rotor to push the caliper up and off, and then wiggle the rotor off. (for the rear at least, which is wherefolks have the most problems)
