If you have a burning oil smell, search burning oil smell. Most likely the valve cover gaskets and cam adjuster seals like you said.

The friend of yours said it looked like it was burning oil from where? The tail pipes? The motor compartment? What did he see to make him think it is burning oil? Or, dud he just smell oil burning?

Burning oil is usually black or dark. I suspect that if you are running in cold weather and getting on the gas, you are seeing what is normal condensation. My car regularly puts out some light white "smoke" when warming up or when accelerating is cold weather, even when it's on the highway at high speed. I think if you do a search, you will find this normal.

After the car is warmed up, if the "smoke" smells heavily of gas, then you may be running too rich. Or if it is continuous and smells of antifreeze, then you may have a water leak (not good).

I suspect it will all but disappear in warmer weather. Unless you already be down south, in which case ignore my comments and start $aving.

Burning oils tend to be bluish.

You could put the car on jack stands and look under the car for the oil leaks, as the oil will flow downward and sometime burn on the exhaust pipes or catalyitic converter. Too much oil and the car is toast.
