Idle problem... CEL Codes, please help
 

I've been having an idle problem with my 2001 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro. It idles a little rough, but on the road when operating at higher RPMs it seems to run just fine, in fact very smooth. There isn't an Audi mechanic anywhere near me, but I was able to pull the following codes..


P0345 Cam Position Sensor
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder misfire detected
P0304 Misfire detected Cylinder 4
P0305 Misfire detected Cylinder 5
P0306 Misfire detected Cylinder 6

Also, the MAF, throttle body, and vacuum lines are all clean and functional. I also took the coil pack off and there was a small cut in one of the wires, but nothing too severe. I hope someone can guide me in the right direction here..


..Also I was told by an audi mechanic over the phone that running conventional oil may cause a sludge build-up on the tensioner, which is why it doesn't idle normal and acts fine at higher RPMs. It was suggested that I change the oil to full synthetic.

I changed to full synthetic about 50 miles ago and replaced the plugs with NGK platinums it seems to idle slightly better, but the CEL is still on and the rough idle is still somewhat present. I posted this before, but the Thread seemed to die, so I decided to repost.. I know someone has had this problem, thank you in advance.

I bet your timing belt jumped on one cam. pull the covers and double check.

I just got the timing belt done.. how can I tell if it jumped

Oh, and I checked to see if there is spark and there is spark being delivered to all cylinders

how long ago was your timing belt job done before the initiation of this current symptoms. if the time frame is significantly long then the diagnosis of a jump belt may be remote. do you want to consider changing the wires? some time changing the plug on old wires allows for too high a resistance for the wires to carry, simply cuz, the wires discharge allot of their energy and very little is left for spark plug ignition. the most common symptom is a lack of power on steep hills

I just drove it over a pass and had the cruise control set. It's a tall pass and had no problems at all. The timing belt was done about four to five thousand miles ago, in March. Could it be the cam position sensor?

no the CMP even if bad, may go on notice bet for the code. mine coded about 10000 miles ago but still cant notice any significant changes in drive ability. i will insist on the wires if you have not change them.

Took it to the mechanic... it was the chain tensioner. They said they have to replace the timing chain, which requires removing both cams and the tensioner.. total cost: $1700

i was close enough. I had a 96 2.8 a year ago that jumped timing on one cam and threw all of those codes.

I have been trying to diagnose my 2000 audi a6 Quattro 2.8L 30V for about two weeks now, it shows misfire cylinder #4,5,6 and Camshaft positioning sensor code P1347 on the scanner, just replaced camshaft positioning sensor yesterday ($97) , but didn't change anything, replaced coil, replaced sparkplugs, plug wires, cleaned MAF, replaced all vacum lines, cleaned breather hoses, still no luck. Sometimes when I start my car while it's hot I can hear the chain and the noise will stay there until I step on the gas pedal just once, then the chain noise goes away. My car runs great on higher rpm, above 1000. It's just idles rough, and that's what I am after. I just found Chain Tensioner on ebay for about $349 new. I will repost again when this problem get's fixed. One more thing! 212K miles on the car, just did the compressions, they all look great.
