Default Internal Sensors

I have a 1998 2.4 A6, I was wondering what the button on the drivers side door column was for? It has an image of a car with what appears to be an Internal Sensor? As default it has no illumination but when pressed it has a Red LED.

The reason I want to know is yesterday I was being a little nosey and pressed the button so that the Red LED was illuminated, then to my horror my car refused to start. I locked the car and went away, when I came back a few minutes later it started with no problem?

Can someone enlighten me to the buttons use? I am assuming it disables the internal sensors but why would it prevent my car from starting??? Immobiliser??

It activates the interior motion sensor related to the car alarm. So if there is motion inside, the alarm goes off. The alarm goes off too frequently when I have mine turned on, so I don't use it.

So that is what it is supposed to look like. My button is damaged, so I don't actually have a picture on it.

Yeah, that is what it does and looks like. I have a 2000 2.7 and it had the trunk button and that motion sensor button right by each other. The motion button is suppose to be used if you are going to lock your car and maybe leave a small pet or kid in it for a few seconds. You open the door, push the button, close the door and lock the car. The doors will lock, the alarm will be on, but anything moving around inside the car won't set it off. With the motion sensor on, you can lock the car with your windows down or roof open. If someone sticks a hand inside the car, it will go off. If yours is like mine, you can hardly hear it, but it works.
