Default Lock problem with dead battery?

Hello,

I have a 1999 A6 2.8 Quattro.

I live in Denver, CO, and we have had a ton of snow the last 24 hours, and it is pretty cold. Not super cold mind you, about 25 degrees or so.

Here's the issue:

I must have left my lights on earlier today when I parked my car and went into my place. I went out to go to the store and my tail lights, license plate light, and parking lights were on, but very faintly, as if my battery was on it's last legs of juice. Dumb move I know. However, when I tried unlocking the car using both the remote and manually through the door lock and the trunk lock, I hear parts moving, but it won't unlock.

Is this common? I feel kind of dumb having to call a locksmith when I have the key in my hand.

Thanks so much!

You should be able to manually open the drivers door for sure. I've done it with my battery disconnected. Same with the trunk I think, but that I am not sure about. Does the lock fully turn when trying to open the drivers door?

But anyways, welcome to the forums and enjoy all that great snow. Hopefully here in MN we will get some soon

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply!

Well, I wasn't able to unlock the drivers side door or the trunk manually...not really sure what the deal was. I had a locksmith come out and he went through the passenger side door with a slim-jim and opened the door with the handle by pulling twice on it. Bad news was it cost me $100. Good news is my insurance reimburses me for that, haha.

The battery was completely dead, again, not sure why I wasn't able to open the door manually with the key, but at least I got it opened up, and the locksmith even gave me a jump.

It was strange, after I got the car started up and running for a bit, every door opened except the drivers side door, from inside or outside. I drove to the store and had to get out the passenger side door. After I got out of the store the door opened up fine. Not sure what the deal was with that, but I'm glad everything is back to normal again!

Thanks again for the reply, and I will most likely be browsing the boards here more often. (I didn't even know about these forums before tonight).
