Default Looking at 2001 A6 2.7T

I am looking at an A6 2.7 T 2001, mileage is 46900, this afternoon. Carfax report is clean. They want 18900. What do you think? How much Hp and Tq does this have? Is it worth it to get an aftermarket warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Torque is 258 FP, and Horse power is 250 HP (All Stock, at least thats what is is on the 2000's)

I say skip that aftermarket warranty, mostly cause they are money making scams. They sound good, wait till you need to make a claim, they deny 80-90% of them and make you jump through hoops to get it. Most people give up long before they make a claim. Then there are the garages... alot of them hate aftermarket warranties because they usually have trouble getting their money out of them once they do the work, so they jack the price knowing the warranty place will deny it, thus making you have to drive somewhere else. (Lets hope your car is working.)

The A6 is a great car, there is generally nothing that goes wrong with they, that is, they have above average service records for cars of a similiar type. They tend to handle high mileage without any significant problems. Things to watch for: control arms, warped rotors, small part engine like throttle body boot, MAFs.... No problems in the engines, power train or trannies on these cars, which are the expensive items.

Can't comment on the price. I bought mine in Canada, got a deal because its higher mileage. (All highway) I got mine 2000 2.7T, for $17K CND, 150K kms. That was about $3K under market price. It has all the options on it , with the exception of Hot weather package and Sport. Neither that I really wanted.

The price is very fair, I bought my 2001 A6 2.7T with 57,000 for around $20,000 with the Certified Pre-Owned warranty.

I would get the vehicle, price isn't bad at all. If you were not going to modify the vehicle then I would def get the warranty. Usually dealerships have more then 1 company that supplies the warranty. Not all but some do. Ask about which one had the most complaints about it. As far as the chips go, APR and GIAC have been the ones that been commonly recommended. Personally I would go with GIAC, but then again it all comes down to preference. Both have programs that are still within the capacity of the engine.

Doing mods is a question of what you want to do with the car. The stock 2.7T has great performance, but the chip does give you potentially 65HP. It also voids most warranties out there if they find out that you did it, even if its unrelated, there are clauses in the contract that will talk about mods.

Chipping the engine is not going to kill it, but it will stress it if you chip it, then 'use it'. Meaning, if you chip it and drive it like normal, not much more stress is added. Chip it and always use the extra 65 ponies, you are most likely going to cause the engine to fail prematurely. Lets face it, you can't dump an extra 65HP into everything and expect it to preform the same as before. What the chip is basically doing is changing boost pressure. Stock, I think they put out 1/2 bar, rechipped, they put out close to 1 bar. The turbos will now run hotter and spin faster, so cooling and lubrication become more important. I would consider using better grades of oil.

Power also has to 'come' from somewhere. This equates to fuel economy as a general rule.

By no means am I saying don't chip. Just know the facts. As well, if you have the Tiptronic, rechip that too so that the power can be used. I read that it takes the approximately 1 sec shift times to 0.2 seconds.

I want to rechip mine, but I have the stock suspension, and I personally think that the stock engine out perfoms the stock suspension as it is. Great ride, but the body roll is bad in tight corners and higher speeds. If i rechip the engine, then the tranny, I should lower and stiffen the supension. Total cost of mods would be $2500-$3000 for me. Still deciding if its worth it, esp given that my car has 162K km's on it. (100K miles) At that mileages, I think I am asking for trouble, and the 2000's have smaller oil lines running to the turbo's..... New turbos... $3-5K and labor...
