Default looking to buy a 98 a6 2.7 quatro $3000

I am offered an a6 with 165000 on it is this a good car for $3000. What should I look at, what are the troble spots. I did skim through new owner stickey and few questions still remain. How to check transmission? how to check turbos? Any other sdugestions?

best suggestion is to keep your money in your pocket. unless you plan on doing a total engine swap, the car isnt worth it with that mileage. Turbos alone would cost you around $3000 to $4000. save your money.

Are you sure it's a 2.7? I didn't think they were available in the A6 untill MY2000.

Autotrader said that Audi didnt start putting the2.7 in the A6 until2000, so most likely its a 2.8. I'd say go for it if you need a car.

I test drove the car today. It is a 98 2.8 Quattro. The car is defenetly showing wear. Things that I have noticed, the display on the dashboard is going out (missing dots and lines)
The manual transmission mode can not be engaged
Shocks all around have to be replaced. Possibly more of suspension parts have to be replced
Engine transmission mounts have to be raplaced (clanks when put in reverse)
Unknown timing belt condition.
Slight ticking noticed from the engine bay (sounds like lifter tick)

I only drove the car in the city so I did not get to test it at high speed... But the transmission is shifting very nice at least for the first 3 gears.

One thing is I did not see is a check engine light... is there such a thing on audi?

I wouldn't do it, it's not like a Nissan, Toyota, or a Honda, it's going to cost to much to get fixed because of the parts and labor, it might not even past inspection.

you'll need new controll arms 1000
timing belt 1000
brakes 500
tranny fluid change 300
new dash cluster 600
tune up 500
the list goes on..... I bought a 2000 and basically did all the above. Bought it for 9000

Well actually the control arms are new they were done just a month ago, together with front brakes.
The rest of the list is defenetly on todo list.
If I did the work myself how much would it cost?
mezonesxbox ... What was the milege on your car? You bought it for 9000+4000 in repairs?
Cappachinoo ... The inspection is defently an issue that is why I was asking about the check ingine light... cuz I did not see it on the dashboard and was wondering if it was malfaunctioning. I shold have just connected my scanner to it to see if it has any codes.

Thanks all for your input
