Default looking into buying a A6

Hi guys,
I am looking at buying a 2000-2003 A6 with the 4.2L or 3.0L in it soon. Anything to look for? I am going to use the car for a DD. Most cars in my price range have at least 100k miles on them. Do the 3.0L and 4.2L have timing belts on them or is just the V6's?
Thanks

They all have timing belts. Audi didn't star with chains until 2005.5 (a6 only).
Anyhow if you opt for the 4.2 you might want to choose one > or =2002 since the transmission is a little bit more reliable for that V8. In general = or <2001 has a few more electrical problems to deal with.
I heard the 3.0 is a huge PITA to work with, so if you work on your cars (and you should or have a lot of money in your savings account) I would go for more power and easier maintenance. So 4.2 or 2.7t (if that is even an option) are my personal choices depending on your preferences and needs.

Start using the search feature and read the posts. The 3.0 has a timing belt that needs to be changed @80k miles and it will cost you $1100-1600 unless you DIY. Whatever you buy, take it out and pay for a thorough inspection by someone who knows Audis. There are always minor issues that you may not know to look for, and you can negotiate down the price. Make sure YOU test every switch, control, etc.
