I was able to score a used one for $225. Everyone wanted $550-750 for a new one.

That's absurd!!!

Recently bought belt, tensioner, idler for less than 100 from Euclid Foreign Parts. Belt was Conti brand, so not trash.

Euclid is not small potatoes. Hunt them up.

Cheers,

George

I have driven Audis for 20 plus years, but all, till my 97 2.8, '90 and back. They were all 5 cylinder, all timing belts.

My 97 2.8 is belt driven. NOW, do YOU have a CHAIN driven 1998 2.8 litre fwd?

I do not know if they went to CHAIN drive, abandoned about 20 years ago even on US made engines.

If you have a "cam chain tensioner" in addition to the timing belt and assorted tensioners, please point them out to me. Maybe I didn't have to have my engine changed out. I, foolishly, accepted that the tensioner split and allowed the belt to slip and slap all my valves and break some valve buckets.

You are telling me that my CHAIN should have avoided this, though I don't know where this CHAIN is.

Cheers,

George

That would be the CAM CHAIN TENSIONER. It is located under the valve cover. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, so please don't post anymore about this subject.

On the plus side....if he was asking about the TIMING BELT TENSIONER, you would be the king of that!

You're right I don't know what I'm talking about. Mine is a 12 valve. Ain't no chain on mine because one cam per bank. Never even seen one of those engines.

Cheers,

George
