Mechanic told me my A6 tipT trans is overengineered and would be fine with 400hp

Well it's more about the torque than anything; from the misc. reports i've seen around, I would say around 300ft lbs of torque would be nearing the upper limits of the transmission. Generally if you are putting more power than that into a vehicle you have the money to properly do the transmission
....So what exactly are you doing?

I know they threw a TIP in the 2003 RS6, but I assume its beefed up. I know the APR chip for the 2.7T will throw it up to 366lb-ft (382lb-ft on 93 octane) and they say its designed to work "within the OEM and Tier 1 Supplier specifications for engine component stress tolerances and performance specifications." Given that info, the RS6 has 415lb-ft so maybe the transmission is the same TIP as the 2.7T...My 2004 A6 S-Line is factory chiped to 280lb-ft and I doubt Audi would factory tune a car to within 20lb-ft of the transmission max stress threshold...I am curious to know the answer as well...I plan on doing an APR upgrade myself once my warranty is up.

The trans internally can handle about 400 horsepower max, but the torque converter is only good for around 350-375 before going to pot. 350 horsepower would be a good goal if you wanted to run around without any problems, but don't exceed it. If you do you will need parts from level 10 or any other company that sells transmission upgrade parts.

The audi guy I spoke to laughed and said that the trans is definitely good to at least 400 horsepower. He said at 400, it would be completely reliable.

Maybe you should have bought a different car.

Sounds like the "audi" guy is pulling figures out of his butt, 98% of the techs that work on audi have no idea what the cars are capable of outside normal operation. So if you still want to push it to 400+ horsepower, knock yourself out... Like jeffla said, don't come crying to us when it goes kaboom.
