My Tranny just went!!! 2000 A6 4.2 v8 anyone got a rebuilt ?
I was driving to work today and sure enough my car stopped catching the gear.Luckly i work on aMarine base so some of my buddys helped me push. After much burning it finally caught fith and i got it to the closest audi place near by, which my luck it was some crap dealership. After all their tests and I was 170.00 dollars poorer they told me the samething i told them "that i need a tranny". So the guy trys to sell me and goes "well i shaved a bit off the price for you" and offers me the tranny and install for like 7800.00, ha ha (service being 125.00/hr). So now i'm on the look out for a good rebuilt one any ideas or any different ways to go (maybe conversion to manuel)? Thanks

Search the junk yards for a used tranny. Otherwise, and I hate to say this, $7800 isn't a bad price for a dealership installed transmission! It's usually $11,000!
Your otheroption is to trade it in.
Good luck!

Here is one completely rebuilt with warranty for about $2000 with shipping:

Seems like a good deal, now just find a shop that wont charge an arm and leg to install it.

Speaking of trannys I thought this would be an ok place to post my question, sorry to thread jack btw, anyways twice now since I have owned my 2000 a6 2.7t quattro the tranny has slipped one of which was last night, is there anything I can do to help prevent failure?
Hey Jo0oshhhh, I was wondering if you noticed any signs before the tranny went out. This might be good info for us 4.2L owners, especially since I have the same car and same miles. Thanks.
Try Chris Semple at Force Five in Concord NH 603-223-6700 he deals in new and used Audi parts. The shipping might kill a deal because of distance but see what he says...
I just had my tranny replaced 2 days ago in my A6 2.7. I had a 3rd party warranty that covered the parts and labor, the cheapest my shop could find was a rebuilt tranny from Audi which ran 3600. The warranty company ended up purchasing the transmission themselves directly from ZF industries, no idea what they paid. Labor is over 16 hours on that though. As my mechanic told me today...its a hell of a lot easier to get the motor out.
