Ryan,
Welcome and good luck with your hunting. A few tips...
Get a Carfax on the ones you're looking at. All you need is the VIN and the following URL: www.carfax.com. This will give you a picture (pretty complete, but don't treat it as infalible -- it's good, but not perfect) of previous owners, accident history, & service history.
Next, some bakground reading. First place to start is Stoney's Links (see my sig for a link to this site), generally considered the ultimate A6 links page and resource guide.
Once you've done some background reading and looked at a few cars (make sure you look at more than one), come back here for any specific questions you may have.
To address some of the questions you had...
- Price sounds VERY low (suspect very high miles or some sort of accident in history)
- This motor has a timing belt. Needs to be replaced every 100k (BARE minumum), 60k if you want to be careful.
- Control arms in front will need replacing at some point if they have not been already.
- See this link for a model guide (inc. mileage info): 2000 A6 Model Guide

Ok, thanks SouthboroAudiguy.
I am going to se it this morning, I will see whay its so cheap.
I could probly get it even cheaper if it has no maintinence records and such.
I can do the T-belt at me dads garage with a book and patience.
I will check out those links.
