New 2001 A6 4.2 Quattro owner!
I just got this A6 this weekend and ive been surfing around looking for Audi enthusiast forums, and trying to learn things here and there about Audi, but now i just want to learn mostly about my specific Audi A6 4.2 v8, like what kind of performance upgrades are out there. I already read that cold air intake is virtually uselss unless your just going for the beefy sound.
Also this Audi has 120k on the engine and i would also like to know some of the most common problems that Audi's get after that many miles. I got a carfax on this audi and everything checked out great, was regularly taken into a dealer for maintenance by a previous owner, but i still would like to know what commonly goes wrong so i can look for those before something goes out.
Thanks in advanced for any guidance!

I'm no expert but I have been reading a lot about the A6 4.2, and the common thing that I have heard about is the tranny going bad and having to be rebuilt. As far as mods go check out www.pes-tuning.com if you have money to spend.

Don't mod the 3.2 or 4.2..they were built that way purposely and are both exceptional
engines especially if they get regular filters and oil changes. If your car has 120k..unless it's been done do a full transmission flush at audi..not jiffy lube Check and double check that it has a lifetime steel timing belt. Change the plugs if needed and you'll put another 120K on it.

Thanks ill see about getting all that done within the next two weekends. Im going to look for a audi dealer first thing this weekend and start asking questions. The timing belt looks relatively new, thats one thing i did look at lol
Soooo when you say dont mod the 4.2, does that include exhaust? Cause im kinda dead set on getting exhaust in the future

I'd considerer putting an new exhaust more under maintenance then modding. TFT, I know people who have never had problems modding for HP but I've known alot more who have. I prefer the chip installed in Germany and tested at Nürburgring

Well then now i dont really plan on doing too much to the engine since you put it that way haha, but i will probably just end up doing small modifications to the body/exterior eg. new fog lights and tail lights....... underglow kit hahah jk jk jk
I'm well satisfied with the stock 4.2l engine and i really dont feel like it needs any major mods i just wanted to see what my options were and what the risks behind them are.
Thank you so much guys for helping me get started with my new/used 2001 A6 4.2L, I'll still be around the forums learning more about Audi's and potentially asking dumb questions lol
