New 2002 Audi A6 V8 4.2 Owner
Hey folks,
i recently bought a 2002 Audi A6 V8 4.2. It has 76.000 miles. I bought it for $11K. I took it to Audi dealer for multi point inspection, and everything came out OK except the serpentine belt. I am going to replace it this weekend. Now my question is should change the timing belt (and all other stuff comes with the kit) soon? I asked the service and they told me that timing belt is OK.
What are your suggestions as Audi owners?
Also i am thinking to get an extended warranty for this car. I am planning to use it at least 5 years and extended warranty for 5 years is around 1500 dollars. I will need to change timing belt anyway and warranty also covers timing belt. What do you think? Should i get extended warranty?
Thanks

I think the extended warranty will pay for your timing belt, so it should be a really good deal. Not much else to speak of. 76K is a little bit early for a new timing belt (mostly if they said it was still okay), but 5 years will more than cover when you'll need it. Everything else sounds good though!

I don't think the timing belt is covered under a waranty. You can get the water pump done under warranty. That ill save you about $900 with labor.
I know I just had mine done under warranty before I sold my 4.2 The warranty co. covered the water pump, but not the timing belt itself.

The warranty WILL cover the timing belt, you just have to wait for it to break! But, don't worry, the warranty also covers the valves!
But seriously, the warranty will cover the transmission, which would be my concern with a 4.2. And control arms!!!

Hey man, what exactly you are trying to say? I should not get the warranty? The timing belt kit is around 500 bucks. I can change everything myself so i am not going to pay any labor. I was thinking to get the warranty just because i am afraid that i may have serious problems like transmission etc. So even if i get the warranty, it is not going to cover my timing belt expenses unless i drive it until it breaks. That sucks though.

Have you looked at replacing the t/b on the 4.2. I just bought one and found a good write up on it. It looks like the the whole front of the car has to come off. from the bumper back to the motor. I have never had anything that wasn't warrenty or struts done on my vehicles. I think this one may get done elsewhere? It looks like a tone of work. And by the way I'd be suprised to see a warrenty company cover a tb since it is considered maintence.

if the warranty covers water pump/t belt i would get it plus you get the assurance if anything else malfunctions (ie transmission, differentials, etc). If you have the money for the warranty, I think that would be a no brainer for this car.....as they get older, they get more and more expensive to keep on the road.
