Welcome fellow newbie! Interestingly enough, I too just purchased an '01 A6 4.2 in Silver that came with only one remote key.

I visited Jack Daniels Audi in Fairlawn NJ this past week and paid $150 for the remote key, which included cutting it to match my only original key.

According to the parts guy, a mid-year change in '01 brought about the "imobilizer" issue, and he wasn't sure if my car had it or not, but in any case, he suggested I speak with service to arrange a session to program the key. $45 later, I had my key in hand, cut and programmed....

I sounds like there are many variations on both prices for this service and differences of opinion over who can do what! I still need a valet key, but at least I now have one extra remote key to fall back on in an emergency.

I also made sure the "deal" I made when I purchased the car included reimbursing of all fees associated with my getting a spare remote key, so I'm not having to pay out for the $195!

I'll have to see how much they want to rip me off for a single valet key!
