New A6 Owner. Tips please..
I just purchased a 2000 A6 Quattro w/2.8L. I am new to the German made cars, but always heard good things about them.
It has 88K miles on it, and I changed Oil/Filter with Castrol 5w-40, new KN air Filter, Fuel Filter and Bosch Platnium plugs in it. The car runs great except for a little lag in shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, which I posted on another thread about a mod in programming the ECU.
I also just purchased a Vag5053 Handheld programmer/scan tool, but have not had much time to really see how it works.
If anyone has any tips for me, or cool tricks I can do with the programmer they would be much appreciated.
Also the motor leaks oil, I am guessing from head gasket, not much oil, but there is a noticible burning smell when I get out after driving, and residue on the side of the motor. Is this normal, or should I say common in these vehicles? I have not noticed any puddles on the ground at all, or the level going down at all.
Thanks agian for anything.

1st to 2nd lag is normal.
Leaking oil is 99% of the time cam seals/valve cover gaskets not head gaskets (in this car)
Has the timing belt been changed ????? If not it is due very soon.
Recode the windows with your vag com.
Change, NOT flush your transmission fluid and change the filter.
Check your control amrs/shocks.
I think that covers it all for the 2.8.
Welcome, and enjoy the new car. I absolutely love mine. 2 years now and still wouldn't trade it for anything else. Ok maybe an Allroad.

Are changing the seals and timining belt on these things a DIY, or would I be better taking it in? I would timining I would have to.
Also is there some post on here on tips and tricks or anything else out there for using these programmers and what codes to use? And what do you mean by recode the windows, what does it do. Thanks

The cams seals/valve cover are a diy with special tools and so is the timing belt. I chose not to do the cam seals diy because it was -10deg f here in MN when mine started to dump oil everywhere. [edit.. dumping oil is not typical, generally they just leak and smell] Actually the engine bay started a little fire. The timing belt I will also pay to have done as it just doesn't seem worth it. Generally we do all our repairs our self.
Recoding the windows basically make it so if you press and hold the lock button on your remote all the windows close and hold unlock opens all the windows. I like it because if at work and I need to shut the roof because it is going to rain I can do it from my window. I can see my car of course.
Here are a few good sites to look into crap. the sonolithics link will have almost all the vag com info you need. Also the user forum here: http://forums.audiworld.com/vag/

Best of luck.

I just bought my 2000 A6 2 weeks ago. 61k miles. I drove it for 3-4 days and almost grenaded my engine because the timing belt idler roller broke apart causing the timing belt to slip on BOTH cams!
I got really lucky though because the cams didn't slip far enough to do any valve damage.
I paid $500 for the timing belt kit though ECStuning and changed the belt myself. That kit comes with everything you'll need including the special tools that Audi uses to lock the crank and cams in place so you get the timing set correctly.
I followed the timing belt write up's that you can find on this forum and the job went pretty smooth. I started on a saturday and buttoned everything up the next day. I took my time so I wouldn't get too stressed out!
I'm not a mechanic, I've turned a few wrenches before though. If you are mechanicaly inclined, you can save youself 500-700 dollars by doing the job yourself!
Other that that, I love my car so far!!!

Do the cam seals and valve covers while you are doing the timing belt change. Cam seals require you to pretty much remove all components that are removed during the timing belt change. ECStuning.com is a good place to get the parts as Leeer73 said. Also you can check out blauparts.com. You can rent tools from blauparts.com and their kits usually come with detailed instructions.
Welcome.
Welcome.
i have an oil leak up front as well on a 98 A6Q. Took it in for a trans leak... replaced gasket and re-filled it. They also noticed an oil leak from the front and quoted me at $2600 for it. So i'll be doing my own timing/water-pump/oil pump seal myself also
Thanks for all the replies... I will start looking into all the programming for this thing. As far as the Oil leak goes, its not terribly bad right now, so going to need to save up to get everything I need so that I can do it myself. I am sure I will have tons more questions as I go along.
Thanks Agian,
Gary
