Newbie looking to buy an A6 - questions
So, with a baby on the way, I'm thinking about selling my 2004 WRX and buying a 2000-2001 A6 2.7T (I will also be selling my 2004 Kawasaki ZX-6R - bye bye toys). I have no experience with Audi's and only know a couple of people that own an Audi.
People have been telling me that Audi's are unreliable especially once high mileage is tacked on. And of course there has to be a reason why the re-sale value is relatively low considering how expensive they are when purchased new right?
Can anyone shed some more light on this? I have my eye on a 2000 A6 2.7T with 105k miles which is selling for $10500. It only has one owner and bunch of 'goodies' on it (e.g. HID lights, NAV, heated leather seats, tires are like new, clutch is perfect). I'm just worried about the 105k miles. I've heard of problems with oil leaks, broken water pumps and timing belts, all of which are costly to fix. Are these issues common with A6's? Common with Audi's? Is a car like this worth $10500?
Thanks for your help in advance! Much appreciated!

Dave,
I own a '98 A6Q with 122Kmiles. I've replaced the timing belt, water pump, cooling fan, various electrical part, been in for a few recall items, and spent a lot of money. But I would do it all over again. Any time you buy an over-engineered German vehicle there's bound to be some maintanence. The thing to do is find a reputable Audi repair guy and get to know them pretty well. For me, the shop I go to, the owner is the mechanic and knows his stuff. He only works on Audi\VW and vintage Porsche's. He's helped me troubleshoot stuff so that I could fix it myself, but I've left the major stuff to him. The dealer will stick it to you every time.
I'd buy it, but not for $10K. I'd ask somewhere in the 9's.
Good Luck!

If the timing belt has not been changed that would be the first thing to do along with the water pump. Because that A6 is around 100k the turbos could fail and you would have to buy new turbos, but the engine is very strong. I think 10500 is a pretty good price of course try to talk it down if you can. Always use sythetic oil. and what do you mean your getting rid of all your fun...chip this and it will be way more fun, plus you have all the features like nav and hids in this and it's not clacky like the subbie...hope you have fun
