So I'm looking at a decent 1998 A6 Quattro for sale, but the owner says it needs a new tranny. Can someone direct me to a listing of transmission interchanges for this year and model?
Would I be better off going manual or auto?
Is it worth a rebuild?
I am a gear head so I will be doing all the work myself.

I don't know anything else about the car yet, so I'll post more details as I get them.

No easy answer for your question... Do a search on transmission problems and you'll find lots of answers and sugestions about replacement.

 

This might not be exactly what you are looking for, but but check on VAGlinks.com in the "Remanufactured" and "Drivetrain" sections. There are a few places selling remaned trannies etc.
