oil leak and smell

I have a 98 A6 with over 250,000km on it. I have noticed that the oil level is going down. I could not find any place where it is going yet but could occasionally smell oil inside the car. I changed and filled the oil only last month.
Any advice or opinion would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Would I be burning it so much that I would have to fill it every two months? This only started last month.

Wow, just wow... I have high hopes for the longevity of my ride now, I mean 250k on a 98', that thing has been driven to hell and back!

Maybe a seal or something, in what situations do you smell burning within the cabin, like when turning on the air conditioner (heat or cool), or just whenever?

I spoke to the previous owner as He had the same problem and it has gone to the dealer and they have looked and could not find anything either. I have all the paperwork done by the dealer for the previous owner. So it is baffling to say the least. The drive is beautiful and apart from that there is nothing wrong with the car. 250,000 kms should not be a problem for a German car. After all it is only about 155,000 miles.

I don't want to wish anything on you but when I smelled oil on my 98 A6 Quattro it was my rear camshaft seals. They were not pouring out oil but the oil drops down on the exaust and the smell comes inside the car. All is not lost if your a fix it yourself kind of guy. If you find oil there this is your issue. I went to the local Autozone and purchased the black RTV that requires no wait time to form a seal. Simply remove the air breather pipe between engine and the throttle body. There is a black round seal there, I took the RTV and placed it around this seal on both heads. I let the RTV dry over night for good measure and have not have the smell or a leak since. You will smell the oil burning off the exuast for about a week based on driving.
