Default P0321 code

I have the P0321 code on my 2000 A6 4.2 ran fine but i couldent clear the code. So i replaced the crank sensor and the engine light clears but i still have the same code. Any suggestions.

Thanks paul

Does the engine run any differently with the code still there? Is it hard to start?
I would look at the harness connector for the crank sensor for any corrosion or stretching in the harness.

before i put the new sensor in the rpms would move up and down but since i replaced it has smoothed out. The engine runs fine starts right up doesn't stall. The engine light came back on today same code P0321. Got me stumped since most the articles i read the car wont start or stalls with this code.

Did you match up the part numbers on the crank sensors? I can't explain why it would give that fault code unless there is something wrong with the sensor/harness, or the ECM is having trouble computing the information. If the numbers match up you may have to take it to the stealership.

Could be a shim is needed, or needed to be removed. I've noticed that 'replacement' sensors dont have nearly as strong a magnet as the originals.
