Default Partially Noob question

I just inherited a 1998 A6. My experience with Audis is limited. My wife lets me drive her A4 (which I paid for) to the dealer once or twice a year when it needs service. The A6 has 83K miles on it. I know it was generally well maintained but I don't have all the records. I don't know if the timing belt has been replaced. I drove it for the first time today. I put gas in it, and when the pump got up over $50, I was kind of surprised, and then I noticed gas was spilling all over the ground. I stopped the pump and gas started gushing out of the pipe, so I put the cap back on. I also noticed that the steering makes groaning sounds when the car is cold. Apart from those items, everything seemed OK. For purposes of settling the estate, it would be advantageous to give the car the lowest possible value that I could reasonably justify. From some of the online "books" I've seen, the value can be anywhere from $6K to $10K. Does anyone want to comment on what would be considered reasonable?
