Planning to buy Audi 2000 A6 4.2L
Hi everyone,
I've been looking to purchase a german car for a few months looking at bimmers, benz, and now audi's. I've found a 2000 Audi A6 4.2l with 93K for $6K. Does anyone have information on this type of A6 4.2l motor? I've read reviews of owners mentioning that this model is always in the shop?
thanks for your time,
Jim

Audi's are precision automobiles. They require precision care and maintenance. That can pretty much be said for the big three german companies. If an audi is taken care of and all services performed it will be not only reliable but a blast to drive. With a used a6 4.2 I would recomend only purchasing if you know it was taken care of. the price sounds too low. The trans on these models take a beating with 300+/300+ hp/ tq. Even with the synthetic trans fluid they get beat up. Having owned audis for years and having bought some the "wrong way" i would be cautious to buy an a6 4.2 with less than 100k for 6 grand. The price is probably deducted to move the problems to someone else. If this is your price range a german car may not be right for you due to the high cost of the correct maintenance. If you can pay more that do so and buy a sound used Audi with full records. Good Luck!

Typically I've seen that Audi's are really either a hit or miss (based off this forum primarily). If you're going to buy one, make sure to read up on the history in as much detail as possible. Make sure that it's been well kept and has generally been running well.
Again, it's already been said that that $6K might be a little low and could be hiding underlying problems that someone was having with it. Again, it always pays off to pay more upfront for a well conditioned car than to get a cheap one and have to continually fix it. Just do your homework on it!
I bought my '99 A6 (with all options) with 140K miles for $7K because I had every record of maintenance and it was very well kept (by family-friends of mine). I've had it almost a year now and have only had to do oil changes and one CV boot. It's perfect otherwise and hopefully will be for years to come, knock on wood!

$6000 seems low with that mileage. Obviously do a carfax on the car and take it to your local dealer to do a pre-purchase inspection. It runs about $110 and they check over everything and will tell you exactly what it needs. Well worth the money. Has the T-belt water pump been done yet? If not, there is about $1200 right off the bat that you will have to spend.
