Default Plastic motor pan and filter question

Hi,

The 2005 A6 I bought has damage to the black plastic pan under the motor....scrapes and a hole (a mechanic, not,cut an access hole to the oil drain).

What is the purpose of this pan and will there be any issues if I just remove it?

Also, where is the oil filter on this car....someone had said it it on the top side of the motor - I don't see it.

Thanks and happy holidays.

Jeff

Leave the pan on -- it aids in aerodynamics and cooling air flow. Don't worry if the hole cut out is small and especially don't worry about scrapes.

Oil filter is on the bottom. You'll need to remove the belly pan to get to it.

What engine? If its a 3.2 it will be on the top under a plastic cover at the rear of the engine. The cover just clips in and pulls off. No secruring hardware. It is a canister type filter. The canister is black and has a large hex portion for a socket. I think its a 36mm. Maybe a 34.

Also since the angle of the housing is completly retarded, make sure you put some rags underneath it

Agreed. Those enginners need to stop making daily trips to amsterdam and get their act together.

Is that picture supposed to be a 1.8 or do they put the filter for the disels on the bottom instead of the top?
