Power steering problem

95 Avant 2.8Quattro
PS feed hose from pump to rack springs a leak.
Pump then goes.
Manage to grab a used pump and sell child to pay dealership for replacement hose.
Power assistance is now intermittent. Basically works with higher revs but nothing at idle.....except when suddenly there is.
So suddenly no power assistance when you need it most: leaving intersections etc turning into intersections anytime you might need to turn a little more sharply....unless of course it decides to work normally.

Components are straight, fluid changed. There must be some pressure for the steering to work but no idea what can be causing the problems.
Any ideas?

RE: Power steering problem

Im wondering if the used pump is bad. It may produce enough pressure at higher rpms, but not always at the lower rpms.

RE: Power steering problem

That was my guess. But I felt that I was clutching at straws, after all if a pump goes then it tends to go completely.
I'll guess I will have try another pump and see what happens.

Thanks for advice

RE: Power steering problem

Most of the time I've read the procedure for changing p/s pump, they say to turn the wheel all the way to the left and right several times... only thing i can think of. good luck
