Default Radio volume problem

Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to this forum and a brand new A6 owner.I just purchased a 97 A6,or should I say stole, from a complete idiot. He said it would not start.I put a new starter on,itnow starts fine.He said it had a rack and pinion problem and needed replacing I simply had it aligned. It's now fine.
Here is the best part though, it has straight body ,great interior, past inspection,Only 94,000 miles, and i stole it for $400. that's not a typo $400 bucks. Okay ,so I'm a little estatic about it.I'm only human.
Enough about the great deal though. My only problem is the radio volume **** will only turn the volume up,no matter which way you turn it.Is this a common problem? Can it be repaired?Or do I just need to but an after market radio? I hate to do that though because I really like the stock radio and its features. My only other alternative is to live with it.Of course that is irratating having to turn the radio off then on again to reset the volume if you turn it up and want it down again.

Any help would be appreciated.
Happy to be a Audi owner even if I did slide in on the cheap side.
Thanks,Jim

Well the stock radio's do have a lot of little problems like that, you can actually buy a re-manned unit from the dealer for a pretty decent price (~$300) and you get money back for turning in your old radio for a core refund.
You could try giving your radio to a local repair guy but, it could end up costing you about the same as a completely re-built unit.

The timming belt on your 1997 A6 would have been due for replacment at 90,000 miles along with an ATF change. Chances are that it was not done. You may google "audi tools" to find a radio removal tool and "audi parts" to find what you need. Audi radios have a radio code, which may be with the owners manual or lost. However, if you are getting a replacement radio, then it should come witha newradio code.

Good point on the timing belt I'll do that next.
Can anyone tell me if this is an interference engine? It might be a bit before I get to changing the belt and I hate to risk the damage.Of course I'm only talking like waiting a week or two. As soon as I put the rebuilt turbo on the Saab, the Audi will take it's place in the garage.
On a scale 1-10 how hard is the Audi's timing belt to change compared to others?
Thanks,
Jim

This is definitely an interference engine and DO NOT put this off! Spend the $265 for the kit http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail....od=GH21112%2DB and git er done. You are probably already stretching the life of the belt and pulleys as it is. Here's a walkthrough. http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng39.shtml

Thanks for the info. and the websites. The 265 for the kit sounds resonable enough.Looks like I will just live with the radio for a while.

The 1997 A6 has the 2.8L AFC engine, with two valves per cylinder. The audiworld link is for the 1999 A6 2.8L engine with 5 valves per cylinder. The 1997 A6 2.8L AFC does not require pulling off the front of the car. You need to search for instructions for 1995 thru 1997 for the A6 sedan or 1995 thru 1998 for the A6 wagon with the AFC engine. Try www.BentleyPublishers.com for the Audi A6 shop CD manual for those years. Then try to find it for less money at: www.themotorbookstore.comor www.themotorbookguy.com .

Thanks for the info. I was ready to tear the front end off. It sounds like it might be easier than I anticapated.
