Realistically, Whats my car worth?
 

Hey All,

I have a 2002 Audi A6 3.0 CVT (110k miles) that I need to sell to pay for bills and textbooks for my classes. The car needs some work and I don't have the funds to repair them, hence why I am going to sell it.

Here's the work it needs:

• TB job hasn't been done
• Both Catalytic Converters may need to be replaced (Fault codes P0421 and P0431 as well as an O2 Sensor code)
• Driver's side headlight washer jet broken
• The car also surges about 200 RPM between 1-2k RPM on a slow and steady acceleration but runs fine after 2k RPM and also in tiptronic

What has been done since I purchased it with 72K:

• Routine Maintenance (oil changes, spark plugs, etc)
• (4) repainted 17" Audi 5-spoke Sport Wheels with Dunlop Sport Signatures
• Dunlops later replaced with Bridgestone Potenza 970AS Ultra Performance All-Season tires (front) and Bridgestone Potenza 960AS Ultra Performance All-Season tires (rear)
• Front Zimmerman Drilled Rotors with Mintex Brake pads
• All front control arms, tie rod ends, and sway bar links as well as the hardware replaced
• Stern Snub Mount Bushing
• Headlights Restored with proper UV sealant
• K&N Drop-in Air Filter

I went to a local Audi indie shop and was told that I am better off selling it as is to a mechanic or someone interested in a fixer-upper and he gave me a ball park number of $1,500. Is that realistic? What should I do? I am in a desperate situation.

Wow. Well for starters nobody is a fan of working on the 3.0 and I don't think I've heard a single positive thing about the CVT transmissions. Then a timing belt job AND cats? That's like $2k+ in necessary repairs right there. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable selling it to someone unless they completely knew what they were getting into. If the car has some extra features like cold weather package, Bose, etc and everything is in REALLY good condition I think you might be able to get $2000 for it. You're definitely in a tough pickle!

I recently bought a Q5 and was going to trade in my 2002 3.0 Audi A6. It has 119,000, and is in great shape. I had the timing belt, and water pump changes at 105,000 miles. I do have a CEL fault for a catalytic converter.

The first dealer I went to offered me $500.00. I left immediately. The second dealer offered me $3000.00 but I decided to keep it and give it to my son who recently graduated from college.

So from my experience, $1500.00 seems to be very realistic for an offer. Good luck.
