Default Replace Secondary Air Pump

1998 A6 Quattro - 176k

A shop told me my secondary air pump is falling apart that that is why I am getting a check engine light. They quoted me $399 for the pump and $150 to install it. How much should the pump run and how hard is it to install? If I could save some coin and do it myself that would be great.

pump price seems reasonable. the pump is located under the car on the passenger side (U.S passenger side). you will see a black pump. examine it and see if you can meddle your way in it.

also there is a flash for the cars ecu to void the secondary air pump. this will put not harm any of the cars components as the SAI is strictly for emissions purposes. flash can be done for around 200ish

I found out I will need to remove the front bumper to remove the old pump. Has anyone replaced the pump without removing the bumper or is that a required step?

I replaced the pump this morning. It took me a little over 2 hours to make the repair. I did not have to take the front bumper off but, it may have been easier to do the repair with the bumper off. I used a flexible socket driver to remove the 3 10mm hex bolts holding the pump to the car. It was a tight fit around the coolant hoses but, I was able to install the new one. My check engine code has not gone away yet for the p0411 but I am hoping it will soon. The car sounds much better when I start it up now. I don't hear air leaking like I did before.
