replacing fuel pump on 4.2 question
 

Hey guys,

I found out that my fuel pump went bad the other day and i was wondering if there were any d-i-y threads or instructions on how to change it out. This is a 2000 a6 4.2. I am ordering a fuel filter first just to see if a clogged filter is the issue but at least i'll have it if it ends up being the pump itself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is for an a4 but pretty much the same...

Does it matter whether i use a bosch or airtex fuel pump?

Greetings! I'm in the process of replacing the fuel pump on my '97 A4, 2.8 (170,000 miles) and am curious in your experience to date, how you determined the pump failed? My own experience with fuel pumps in the past, especially in the old days of mechanical pumps, is that they fail catastrophically rather than intermittently. However, my car has had an intermittent, on-or-around idle, stalling problem for the past couple of years, exacerbated by cold weather. I think I've managed to rule out other possible causes and did notice a noisy fuel pump operation emitting from the tank. However, a volume test revealed no problems nor did any electrical testing of the pump. My only clues have been the stalling and then noisy operation, as well as the mileage of the vehicle. In any case, I'm about to install a replacement pump and, as to your question of brand, I don't think it really matters but is rather an issue of personal preference. Great write up..... I removed mine over the weekend and i hook it up to an external power supply and the pump worked, so I am still puzzled as to what is going on, i checked the pump fuse and test the current to the pump; got 1.5v on the middle tab...

This all started last week when i drove the car (almost everyday) and parked it, i was sitting in the car while it was ideling and it just turned off. That is why i suspected it was either the fuse or the pump, so now i do not know what is going on............damm A6

I had the same problem, what most of you don't know is that Audi 4.2s have a split tank and 2 forms of fuel pumps. It's the oddes thing. One half will have a full gas level and the other will be bone dry. How you can tell will be to drop your tank, but I sugest just replacing the pump and filter and fill the car up. Then see what happens. The trick is if you don't want to replace the pump, keep your car a half tank to full all the time so it never stalls on you. Trust me it works. The pump has a mind of it's own sometimes and that is why it's best you change it.
