Default Sensor Woes - Camshaft Sensor

98 A6 Quattro
141k

I keep getting the engine code P1392. It will come and go and I am told it is the camshaft position sensor, or hall sender.

One shop told me I needed to replace the sensor.
Other people have recommended I change the wires.

Can I order the wires? Where do I get them from?

Any help would be great.

quick easy test - swap the right bank and left bank sensors and see if the code follows the bad sensor (shifts banks). Only 2 bolts hold them on, piece of cake.

I would also check the tension on the timing belt while you have the covers off. To test the tension, try and twist the T belt, if you can turn it 90* or more, then there is something wrong with the tensioner/s which is causing the fault code. Did you just change the timing belt, or has it been at least 80k since you last changed it?

The timing belt was changed by the previous owner, that was done some time ago. I have had the car about a year. The code will be on for weeks and then be off for weeks, or sometimes the car won't have a code for a month or 2. I would like to get the car in a a more stable state.
