So I take my car to Monro Muffler ......
I'm tight on cash and got a line of credit through there ... car needs a new front axle (95 A6q) and ******* just calls me and says .... "well you have to leave it for 2-3 days and they will re-build YOUR axle". So I think he's joking, he's not. He says his parts guy can't get one anywhere and asks if I want to leave it there. Now Number one, you cant find an axle for that ? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Do you not have internet access? and who the hell is "your parts guy" cause he's an idiot. Number two ..... you think you have to rebuild MY broken axle rather than replace it so why the hell would I pick one up myself and bring it to you to install... clearly you don;t know what the hell you're talking about. F*@K, wish I could do it myself. I'm going to get my car .... WTF.... sorry just venting....

Broken axle or bad CV joint? Broken axle, you can't drive the car. Bad CV, you will hear it grumble while making a turn. Either way, I guess you can possibly rebuild a CV joint... New roller and etc, but to be honest, I wouldn't trust them. Replacement outer CV is $100 or so for the part.

CV Joint
Yeah, if the CV joint is bad it is quite cheap. I posted about my experience on doing the replacement on this website, and their are other numerous threads on the subject. Get your car out of there ASAP before you end up paying $2000.00 for a new CV joint.

Hxgaser,
I don't think you can really rebuild a worn CV joint, yourself, lest you have a full machine shop.
You got galled ***** and races, hot spots in or on both, they are going to sieze at some point.
I have had outer CVs on a hard turn pop the cage, drop the ***** out, the car is immobilized.
You ain't gonna regrind and replace the *****.
My 97 A6 is in the shop again. Had the engine changed out, via aftermarket warranty. Converter bolt dropped when the boneyard pulled the motor, 52 days in the garage, mind you, gave it to me, drove it 2 days, intermittent screeching noises, later banging noise, back to the garage.
While on the rack to pull the tranny, both front boots broken, used car lot relented, safety related inspection violation, they bought and paid for 2 rebuilt half shafts, about 95 bucks each. That's the price I got for them when I looked.
Same car, same inspection, same dealer, BRAND NEW STICKER, as the salesman pointed out, bought the car 2 weeks later, after the mech finished the bolt prob, called me to say I got a prob. Converter ceramic core was melted down to a blob in the exhaust, that converter's Ox sensor was unplugged, still showed on OBD as P1106. Aftermarket is 400 bucks.
I still have my '90 100, should have stayed with it. Drive it everyday and it is a damned good car.
Same lot, BTW has a supposed to be '90 with a V8 in it, didn't know they made one. 5 grand. Looks good but I wouldn't buy another car from them.
Cheers,
George
