Well first off, the bad info screen is something the plagues basically all Audi's - i'd say 2003 or older - and even the VWs with the same display system. It is basically impossible to fix and so the option becomes to either live with it or deal with the dealer.
The problem with the dealer is they have to replace the whole cluster which is around $800 the last i heard. The way the clusters work is that if they have less than 100 miles or something like that they can be rolled forward by the dealer (or i suppose Vag-Com?) ONE time and ONE time only. Some people have bought clusters off of ebay in hopes that their screens are better than the one they're replacing, i have to assume that some of them are bad just the same - also the problem with that is the mileage. Mileage is stored in the cluster as far as i know so you'd be stuck with that persons mileage reading.
edit: Here's a pretty good resource for the bad info screens (basically concludes that it's impossible to fix): http://www.modifieda4.com/web/misc/trip-display.html
