Squeking noise when engine is cold
I hope someone can help me diagnose the problem I have on my 2002 2.7t. When I start the engine I hear a high pitch noise (cannot exactly tell if it is from the back or front near the belt). It lasts for about a minute and stops once the RPMs go down. It is especially loud on colder days or if the car was not driven. I have just realized this morning that my powersteering fluid level is low (heard a noise when turning at low speeds) and I have read on these forums that this may be causing this squeking noise. Any help is appreciated?
Also, can you please recommend what type of powersteering fluid to use?I am a second owner of this car and my certified warranty just expired two months ago. I assume current fluid was added by the dealership when it was serviced. I dont wan't to mix if I don't have to.
Thanks.

One question is have you had the timing belt done recently. Right after I had mine done, the first time i would crank it each day it would make a high pitch whine for about one minute and this lasted about a month or so. I took it in the first time i heard it and my mechanic said it is normal, that the belt was tight and needed to be broken in. Definatly top off your PS fluid too because it could just be the power steering pump starving a little for fluid.

I just experienced the same thing yesterday. This is the first time for me and I have not had the timing belts changed as the a6 has only 50k miles on it. It had been driven about 600 miles the day before. Very strange.
It is a 2003 2.7T tiptronic. I started the motor after a few times and the sound was absent.

I have a similar problem on cold start and doing a close to full lock. PS fluid level is ok, but seems to go down from Max to Min every 2 months. Which is something I need to look into.
Oh, timing belt was changedabout 30k miles ago. However the water pump was not changed at that time.

I have the same problem too on my '01 2.7T. It just started when it got cold outside. It only seems to last for a few min then goes away. I was thinking it was a turbo barring or something. Power steering fluid is fine.

RE: Squeking noise when engine is cold
I carefully listened to the noise last evening. As far as I am concerned the noise came from the Secondary Air Injection Pump which I had replaced in June. The reason whythe noise stops qiuckly is that the pump normally runs forless than 2 minutes on a cold start. In my case it was certainlyNOT the power steering pump.
