Starter or the Steering Column?
 

Today my 2006 Audi a6 4.2 decided to act up on me. Started fine in the morning but when I decided to go get groceries it would not start. No crank, just a couple dash lights, and the key gets locked in the ignition. Something similar happened when I bought the car and it turned out to be a bad starter, so I had that replaced. My mechanic said the wires connecting to the starter were a bit loose but he got them tightened up. So my question is do you guys think its the wires losing connection to the starter or has the steering column gone bad which causes similar issues?
Rundown of the problem
- No crank
- just a few dash lights come on, no MMI
- Key gets stuck in ignition

I know it sounds silly however, with the key being stuck in the ignition, sounds to me like the car doesn't think it's in park so wont let you turn the starter...... is something stopping the shifter from going exactly to the Park position? - presuming you have an auto that is! Try and start it in N...
