Default Starts hard on first try

I have a 2005 A6 3.2, Like he title says If the car sits for awhile (a couple of hours) and you go to turn it on it takes it 4-5 seconds, if you try again it starts right up. Sometimes on the first try it will start but shudder and shut off. I'm not sure if anyone has had the same issue or not, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Was the coil pack recall ever performed on the car?

Im not sure what was done to it, it seems like it was in for service on a regular basis. Would bad coil packs do that?? I was kind of thinkin it was a fuel issue but im not sure.

Faulty coolant temp sensor can cause this.
Clogged fuel filter, worn plugs.

Have to scanned the car for codes? If the coolant temp sensor is bad it will throw a code.

No i havent scanned it yet i plan on replacing the fuel filter and pulling the plugs to see what kind of shape they are in. Can I use a regular (autozone) type scanner or do i have to use the vag-com.

generic scanners will give random misfire codes or something else vague in which u will have to use deductive reasoning to figure what the problem is. Vag-com will tell u exactly which cylinders are misfiring(bad coil, bad spark plug, bad icm), if one of the coolant temp sensors are faulty and which one as well as the readings they are giving in real time. it can tell u whether ur fuel is too lean during idle despite the ecu trying to increase it (fuel filter, or fuel pump).
