Talk Me Down from Selling - '05 4.2
So, I have had my '05 A6 4.2 w/ sport package for about 10 months now. It's got 63,000 miles on it and other than brakes and an engine mount, it's been all good.
I have been catching myself thinking about selling it...no real reason...just starting to wonder if once it starts getting "up in years" I am going to run into big-ticket expenses...plus it's still a beautiful ride and would sell for a decent price.
What do you think?
Timing chain at how many miles?
Other big things that typically happen with this car?
Or...am I nuts...I hear the 4.2 is a bulletproof engine...?
Thanks!

If you like to get your hands dirty once in a great while, keep it.
My understanding from various posts including in discussion the 4.2L is that this engine is fairly easy to work on... although being a V8 may render parts and services much more expensive than the V6. Moreover, you don't want to give up all those 300+ ponies, do you?
The maintenance schedule doesn't say anything about the timing chain.
They have the timing belt recommendations in there.
In theory a timing chain should last for the life of the car, but I would probably replace it every 100,000 miles.
I'm sure there are quite a few guys with four-point-twoers in here that will straighten your bewildered thoughts out.
I'm sure also that the car wasn't cheap when you bought it. If you had the money to purchase it, I would say...KEEP IT.

Selling
Jim:
I am not even sure what it's worth...looks like they sell anywhere between $18k and $23k. I will list it this weekend if I can get around to it...I won't look to get any more than someone will pay for it.
Really, not looking for a huge win...just want to sell and move-on. Prob in the $19-$21k range.

No reason to sell it if there is nothing wrong. Just remember that taxes, titles, and fees will be close to $2,000 to buy another car at a similar price, atleast that is the case where I live. Cars depreciate and are not good investments, usaully it is better to nurture the machine. Unless money is not your major concern..... sell it and get a 2.0T.

I agree...as life would have it, it's now more than just wondering about what it could cost over the years.
Really funny how I asked the question 2 days ago and today it looks like I need to be worried about money (Mom sick and needs my help - so I need to gather-up all the cash I can to give her a hand in a big way).
I guess it makes the decision to sell that much easier...oh well...I'll get another for SURE one day!

Yeah, thanks...I am research maniac, so I have all of the numbers dialed-in. I have two people coming to look at tomorrow (I listed on Craigslist for $21,500.
Just want to sell it...kinda like just ripping the bandage tape off your chest...just "do it" and get the pain over with.
Thanks!
