Default temp gauge

i have a problem with the temp gauge on my 02 3.0 a6. while driving up north this weekend (about 200 miles) i noticed that the temp guage went all the way to cold. the heat worked fine the whole time. if i turned up the temp on the climate control, it got warmer and cooler if i turned it down. so that seemed fine. after awhile, the gauge started woking again and went back to the middle. same thing on the way home. is this a thermostat problem? is it the gauge? or is it something else? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Default RE: temp gauge

It could be the gauge, but it could also be the coolant temp sensor. I would have the fault codes checked.

i have the same problem. i have no idea what it is though. I read a threw a few weeks back where some guys were addressing the issue and seemed pretty knowledgable(sp?). I forget what they said though. I wanna do a search.
