Timing Belt without Water Pump
 

Hello everyone,

The previous owner of my vehicle, for whatever reason, didn't get the water pump replaced. The job was done by the dealer.

Now, I am experiencing a slow coolant leak that is most likely from the waterpump. TB was done about 25k miles ago at 80k miles. What would you guys suggest?Getting the whole TB done including the waterpump, thermostat etc... or just get the waterpump done?

While on this topic, where can I buy the cam lock tool from? I tried ECS but can't seem to find it. Blauparts rents them which is not an option for me.

I'm shocked that the dealer did not replace the water pump. The dealer usually will not warranty the timing belt without the water pump being done also.

If your timing belt has 20K on it and they have also replaced tensioners guides and rollers, then I would do your water pump and thermostat, and if you really want to get technical, you could change your cam seals also.

It sounds like you know what you're doing, but make sure it is not the secondary cooling pump leaking (it happens a lot on the 2.7T; not sure if the 4.2 engine has one). I'd also check hoses and the radiator since you seem to have about 105k miles.

Thanks for the replies guys. Will look more into it when I get the time. Don't want to leave it too long or that is just asking for trouble.

Do any of you know where I can get the cam lock tool from to buy? It used to be on ECS but I can't seem to find it anymore. Thanks.

I ran into this too. The mechanic said the waterpump looked better than the one he had in his hand. Don't kno if it had already been replaced or not but He didn't do it. I figured a car dealership would gouge me anyway for the pump so I thought maybe he was being honest...who knows but it is still going...:D

some ppl dont even use the cam lock tool ... but rather safe then sorry

I just did mine last month with no cam lock tool. Bought the kit from blauparts.com

Just make sure the crank is on its timing mark before you remove that little cover and then take a 5' straitedge and mark all the way across both camshafts. No big deal. Also crank the engine over by hand twice slowly to check your work after you've (re) installed the belt.

Your call on if you want to replace it again. Keep in mind though that they may not have replaced the tensioner or pully either and those siezing up are more of a worry than the belt breaking.

Also simply check to see that the coolant lines are snapped onto the radiator completely. They are plastic fittings that are hard to re-attach.

I had a coolant leak on my 2.7t too. Twas the secondary water pump. Not cheap cos it's a bugger to get to.

Probably my falult, but I'm looking for the v8 camlock tool and not the v6 version, if there is one.
